Alaska Airlines made a huge devaluation recently overnight with no advanced notice whatsoever. It now takes a ton more miles to redeem for an award that I had my eye on. This is one of the reasons why I believe in the philosophy of spending miles as quickly as possible because they tend to be worth less in the future. Lucky over at One Mile at a Time goes into the devaluation in detail.
This is a bit disappointing because I was eyeing two one way awards out of New York to Asia which would have been 100k Alaska Airline miles each. Emirates’ first class ticket for this route normally prices out around $15,000. Maybe this is a lesson to take advantage of things that are great values rather than hold off.
The awards are now 180k miles a piece which means I’ll have to come up with 360k miles if I still want the experience. I’m currently sitting on ~85k Alaska Airline miles and had enough Starwood Preferred Guest points to transfer over to bring my total to 200k. There’s still a lot of time before I have to plan the honeymoon trip but this definitely hurts my plans a bit.
