I have always wanted to visit New Orleans and just found a way to get there on the cheap. I booked a great deal with Spirit Airline miles for New York to New Orleans for 5,000 miles and $11.20. Traveling alone isn’t fun so I booked two round-trips for 10k miles and $22.40.
If you book at least 6 months (180 days) out you can avoid paying an award redemption fee. Booking within a 6 month window tacks on an extra $15. The $11.20 per person fee is unavoidable ($5.60 security fee tax each way). Check out the guide to Spirit Airline’s frequent flier program Free Spirit.
I was pretty lucky to get this itinerary because there is usually a good amount of availability for outbound flights for 2,500 miles for New York to New Orleans, but availability on the way back is generally scarce. There’s also the option of paying for the return flight one-way if mileage redemption was not available.
How to get the miles easily
Bank of America offers the Spirit Airlines credit card, which has a sign up bonus of 15,000 miles after your first purchase. The annual fee is waived for the first year.
Getting there is the hard part
Now that I have the flights booked, I just have to figure out the accommodations which should not be too hard as every major chain has a presence down there. The hard part will be not to over indulge on all the great food and drink.
